In 1961 the Evangelical Church of the Republic of Niger (EERN) was constituted and officially recognized by the national authorities. Due to the considerable autonomy of the local churches unity was difficult to establish. Some congregations founded by the SIM, e. g., the International Evangelical Church and the Gourmantché Church, both in Niamey, remain independent. In 1991 a split occurred in the church. A dispute arose over the admission of church members moving from one place to another and asking for recognition as members of another community. It led eventually to the formation of two new churches (cf. no. 2 and no. 3).
